Happy to Have What She Can Get

I wrote a poem tonight (sort of). Not very much talent, but thought it did express some of my thoughts on wives of alcoholics.

Happy to Have What She Can Get

Sad world where men drink and drug to avoid pain
Yet inflict pain on others
Due to their violent outbursts
Caused by the drink and drugs that were supposed to stop the pain.

The victims of the violence the morning after
Fear bringing up the issue
Lest the peaceful harmony at breakfast
Be disrupted by talk of the bad times the night before.

So nothing is said but pleasantries
The peace is so delicious
The victim hangs onto it for dear life
And clings to these companionable mornings.

Tonight he will not drink and think himself well behaved.
She will be thankful for this and again will savour these peaceful evenings.
Remembering the long lonely days and nights with no one.
Happy to have what she can get.
